The AI Price Tag: Subscriptions, Startups, and Stellar Awards
Navigating OpenAI's New Pricing, ManusAI's General Agent, and the Pioneers of Reinforcement Learning
AI is Getting a Glow-Up: Subscriptions, Secret Startups, and a Big Fat Award
Big news: OpenAI has stirred the pot (again!) with a major shakeup to its pricing. It seems they’re testing just how much companies will pay for brainy AI assistants—$20,000 a month, anyone? Meanwhile, a mysterious startup called ManusAI has jumped out of nowhere, claiming it has built the first “general AI agent.” And in an inspiring throwback moment, the pioneers behind reinforcement learning (basically how AI learns from trial and error, just like us after touching a hot stove) have been awarded the prestigious Turing Award. Buckle up, this one’s a ride!
OpenAI’s New Pricing: Because Who Needs Rent Anyway?
So, OpenAI has been offering us the delightful perks of ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month. But now, they’re throwing some seriously expensive AI agents into the mix. Businesses may soon be asked to shell out a whopping $20,000/month for “PhD-level” AI agents, which apparently can handle deep research tasks. More basic versions may be available for $2,000/month, because clearly that’s the AI bargain of the century.
To soften the blow for everyday users, OpenAI is also considering a credit-based system. Instead of locking tools behind different plans, you’d get AI credits to spend on the features you actually want. So, basically, it's like getting AI with an arcade-style token system. Fancy!
Also, if you’re on the Plus plan, congrats! GPT-4.5 is now officially available to you, which means even better responses, faster processing, and maybe (just maybe) fewer hallucinations from your chatbot friend.
ManusAI: The Mysterious New Kid on the AI Block
Out of thin air, a startup called ManusAI has dropped a bombshell: they claim to have built the first “general AI agent” that can think, analyze, and act across various tasks. Unlike previous bots that get confused when you ask them to make a sandwich, this one can apparently sift through job resumes, analyze stocks, and perform property research… on its own.
Sounds too good to be true? Maybe. But they’re letting people sign up to try it, so we’ll just have to wait and see if this thing is the real deal or another case of AI overpromising and underdelivering (cough self-driving cars cough).
AI Legends Get Their Flowers
Remember when everyone thought AI just played chess and couldn’t do much else? Well, two guys, Andrew Barto and Rich Sutton, changed that by proving AI could learn the way animals do—through trial and error. Fast forward a few decades, and that idea is now at the heart of AI as we know it. Their hard work has officially been recognized with the Turing Award, which is basically the Nobel Prize of computer science.
Interestingly enough, while Sutton is thrilled about AI’s future, Barto is a bit more hesitant, calling himself a “Luddite” (read: someone skeptical about all this tech craziness). The debate continues!
