Someone left the lab door ajar—and an 816-billion-parameter model just walked onto a pair of Mac Studios.

Meta's Muse Spark Open Goes Desktop

Meta launched Muse Spark Open, billed as the most capable U.S. open-weight model yet. The package packs about 816 billion parameters, a 1 million-token context window, native multimodality, and chops for long-horizon work, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning. 🧩

The wild part: it runs locally on two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with the latest MLX stack—you'll want roughly 1 TB of RAM. Meta and Apple teamed up on the port; Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO John Ternus publicly cheered the drop on X. 🖥️

It's also available through API platforms and paired with Muse Code. Demo reels show the model fixing a Mastodon client and reviewing/cropping footage in DaVinci Resolve—like handing a very patient intern both a keyboard and a timeline.

Anthropic Hands METR Real Desk Badges

Anthropic onboarded six METR staff with hardware, office space, and internal tools roughly on par with its own risk teams. 🧾 METR publishes its risk assessments; Anthropic cannot veto them and may only demand redactions in narrow buckets (customer data, attorney-client material, model architectures). METR can even say publicly whether those redactions looked justified.

The company also named SecureBio and Accenture as evaluators and floated early talks with Hugging Face. The setup uses three tiers; METR sits at tier three—the deepest access lane.

FTC Civil Subpoenas Hit OpenAI and Anthropic

The FTC sent civil investigative demands to OpenAI and Anthropic, seeking documents on safety incidents, safeguards, marketing claims, and privacy practices. 🛑 The probe is framed as consumer protection, with plans to compel executive testimony. Separate from this week's state lawsuits—different courts, different theories—so don't mash the stories together.
