Marvell Bets $115 Billion on Light as the Times Takes Brave to Court
Marvell scoops up Lumentum in a giant AI chip deal, the New York Times sues Brave over scraping, Anthropic's updated IPO filing shows its huge compute bill, and Goldman takes coding bots away from bankers.
Buckle up, buttercups, because Monday's AI news came with a nine-figure price tag... make that twelve.
Marvell Goes Shopping for Lasers
Marvell Technology is buying optical-parts maker Lumentum in a deal valued at $115 billion, per Reuters. 💡 Lumentum makes the light-based parts that zip data between thousands of chips inside AI data centers.
- 🧩 It's one of the biggest deals of 2026, and a bold bet that Big Tech's AI spending isn't slowing down.
- 🥊 It also gives Marvell more muscle against rival Broadcom.
- 📉 Investors weren't thrilled: Marvell fell 13% and Lumentum 19% on Monday.
Basically, Marvell bought the highway, not just the cars.
The Times vs. Brave
The New York Times sued Brave Software, the company behind the Brave browser, in federal court in Manhattan. ⚖️ The complaint says Brave scraped its journalism into the Brave Search index and sold access to AI companies including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere.
- 🧾 The New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel filed a similar suit the same day, as The Verge reports.
- 🛑 The suits also target Brave's paywall blocker feature.
- 📝 These are allegations only, and no court has ruled.
Anthropic Shows Its Homework
Anthropic's amended IPO filing, reported by Reuters, shows third-quarter revenue of about $16.96 billion, up 47% from the prior quarter. 📈 That's still fast, but slower than the 144% jump in the second quarter.
- 🖥️ It has about $895 billion in computing and infrastructure commitments, with partners like Amazon and Google.
- 🧠 The company says it's considering tighter human oversight of some research decisions as its AI does more of that work itself.
Imagine your homework getting so good at doing itself that you need a hall monitor for it.
Goldman Takes Away the Coding Toys
Goldman Sachs has limited AI coding tools like Claude Code and GitHub to engineers only, after months of letting bankers and traders try them, per Bloomberg. 💼 The bank cited productivity and risk management, and some traders are reportedly annoyed. Vibe coding on the trading floor: officially paused.
