Elon's Mega Merger: The Future of Social Media and Tech
How xAI's Acquisition of X is Redefining the Landscape of Social Media, AI, and Innovation
Today in AI Land
We have nature-loving robots, therapy bots that rival your favorite therapist named Susan, and Elon Musk doing... well, Elon things again.
Let’s Start with the Big Stuff.
Elon Buys Elon
You know that feeling when you borrow someone else's snacks and then just decide to own their kitchen too? That’s kind of what Elon Musk just did. His AI company, xAI, just bought X — yep, the entire social media platform formerly known as Twitter—for $45 billion. Now Elon owns a company that owns his other company. It’s like Elon-ception.
The plan? Roll xAI’s mega-brainy Colossus supercomputer together with X’s ocean of tweets and memes to build something “truly spectacular,” or at the very least, slightly less spammy. With 650 million users and a titan of a data center, xAI is now fully turbocharged with content and computing power.
So if your cute cat tweet disappears behind quantum math, don’t worry — it’s all part of the master plan.
Softmax: AI’s Hippie Cousin
Over at the Twitch founder’s workshop, Emmett Shear wants to build AI that takes lessons from... ants and trees. Yep, the natural world is now the smartest thing in Silicon Valley.
His new startup, Softmax, is throwing out the “let’s just make models bigger” rulebook. Instead, they're studying how ants team up (cue bug-sized teamwork montages) and how our tiny cells run a pretty sophisticated operation inside our squishy human bodies.
Softmax isn’t interested in building AI that just says, “Sure Jan” to every prompt. They want to understand intelligence all the way down to its building blocks, like a LEGO kit designed by Mother Nature. With a team of 10 high-IQ humans studying swarms and cells, they hope this will lead to safer, more aligned AI. Or at least AI smart enough not to think spam emails are exciting poetry.
AI-Therapist vs. Human-Therapist: Fight!
What happens when you pit an AI therapist (aka Therabot) against a human therapist? No, this isn’t the next Marvel movie, but it’s close.
At Dartmouth, researchers stacked Therabot against real-life therapists and found that the AI version held its own — helping patients reduce depression and anxiety almost as well as your average couch-sitting, glasses-wearing human pro.
Don’t go firing your therapist just yet — the study did say more research is needed. But still, your AI buddy could someday help you work through your existential crisis and also order snacks without missing a beat. Now that’s multitasking.
Butterfly Effect’s Agent Levels Up
Chinese startup Butterfly Effect, which may or may not have a superhero name generator working overtime, just upgraded their popular AI agent “Manus.” It had already impressed folks by beating big-name agents, and now it’s running on Claude 3.7.
It also has a shiny new mobile app, longer memory, and a premium tier. But fair warning: people are still stuck on the waiting list like they’re trying to get into a secret club that only lets you in if your favorite color is “neural net beige.”
Doctor AI Will See You Now
Meanwhile, Apple is working on turning your iPhone into a doctor. No stethoscope required. Their Health+ app aims to become a personal health coach by using AI trained on flashy doctor data and medical devices.
And in news that’ll make your heart skip a beat (possibly literally, please check with your iPhone doc), AI tools are now doing things like:
- Catching cancer in CT scans
- Predicting lung cancer outcomes
- Turning nightmares of complex treatments into organized strategies that doctors can actually use
Basically, your phone might soon tell you to eat a salad and get some sleep with the warm concern of a yoga instructor who’s also a brilliant oncologist.
Make Your Own Ghibli Movie (No Drawing Experience Needed)
Do you love Studio Ghibli movies but animate like a potato? Great news — AI is here to help.
Here’s the surprisingly fun process to turn yourself into a whimsical animation genius:
- Use ChatGPT to generate a magical Ghibli-style image.
- Upload it to Hedra AI, sprinkle in a bit of storyline, emotion, and some solid “anime inspo.”
- Hit generate.
- Pause to do a celebration dance while the AI builds your custom animation.
- Voilà! You now have your own animated character explaining taxes or baking tips in the style of Spirited Away.
Other Cool Things to Know Today
- Google has released Gemini 2.5 Pro for free (with limits), and it's kind of a big deal.
- Replit unveiled Agent v2, which is basically your new best AI coding assistant, now with way more brainpower.
- Sesame launched 30-minute AI phone calls with ultra-realistic avatars. Just don’t fall in love with your headset.
Two Cool AI Tools You Should Know About
-
WebWave – Need a website and don’t want to break your brain or your wallet? WebWave lets you make a snazzy one in under 3 minutes, and it won’t ask you to “learn HTML.”
-
MeetGeek – Your meetings just got way better. This tool records, summarizes, and sends meeting notes faster than the speed of “Can everyone hear me?”
In conclusion, AI is now managing health, feelings, animation, and basically your entire week. It’s collaborating with trees, flirting with therapy, and maybe even helping solve cancer. No pressure, humans.
